Contraceptive Injection
The contraceptive injection contains a progestogen hormone. Depo-provera® is the brand used most often and it is renewed every 12 weeks. Noristerat® is another brand and it is renewed every 8 weeks. It is injected into the muscle in your bottom. Releasing the hormone slowly into your blood stream. It is more than 99% effective. This means that less than one woman in 100 who use this method of contraception will become pregnant each year.
Advantages
- can be used whilst breast feeding
- you dont have to worry about whether you have taken your pill or not
- women who cant take the COMBINED PILL can use it
Disadvantages
- it can sometimes take upto 2 years of not having the injection to conceive
- once you have had it, it stays in your system for 3 months so if any side affects accure you have to wait for the hormone to leave your body which could be between 2-3 months
- irregular bleeding
